Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories – Brooklin Begg
By Diana CorredorIn our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we showcase students whose academic journeys embody the depth and impact of a Social Science education at Western University. This edition highlights Brooklin Begg, a third-year student pursuing an Honours Double Major in Sociology and English Language and Literature.
Begg’s passion for Sociology stems from a deep curiosity about the structures that shape society and a commitment to fostering meaningful connections. “I want to understand external social nuances so that I can create meaningful connections and changes,” she shares. Her studies have provided her with the tools to analyze the world critically and explore the complexities of social systems.
Beyond the classroom, Begg has embraced leadership roles that have allowed her to apply her academic insights to real-world initiatives. As an Undergraduate Western Student Senator At-Large, she participates in subcommittees that shape academic policies at the university. She also represents Arts and Humanities, broadening her network and amplifying student voices. Additionally, she has spent two years with the Social Science Students’ Council, currently serving as a Policy Research Analyst in Advocacy.
Begg’s experience in the Faculty of Social Science has also led her to collaborate on initiatives supporting first-generation students. Through the guidance of Professor Julie McMullin, she has worked with Western’s Careers and Experience team to develop resources that expand career opportunities for students who may not have immediate access to professional networks. “Careers and Experience offers programs and initiatives tailored to students' unique circumstances to help them succeed,” she explains. Her role as the University Students’ Council’s Academic Coordinator allows her to bridge these resources with student needs, further enhancing the support available on campus.
Reflecting on her time at Western, Begg credits the Faculty of Social Science with helping her grow both academically and personally. “Sociology teaches me to look beyond the status quo, and I find myself asking deep questions that address the foundations of what’s often taken for granted,” she says. This perspective has strengthened her ability to think critically, problem-solve, and lead with intention.
For prospective Social Science students, Begg offers this advice: “Challenge yourself—put yourself in new situations, take classes outside of your module, and foster community connections.”
Begg’s story is a testament to the opportunities and transformative experiences that come with studying Social Science at Western. Stay tuned for more inspiring success stories from our students, and follow our social media channels to see how they are making an impact in the world.
