Information Sessions

Launch of new tri-agency Indigenous Research Capacity and Reconciliation—Connection Grants

The new tri-agency Indigenous Research Capacity and Reconciliation—Connection Grants invites proposals from applicants affiliated with First Nations, Métis and Inuit not-for-profit organizations, as well as with other not-for-profit organizations or Canadian postsecondary institutions in any discipline.

The initiative will support short-term targeted interdisciplinary events, outreach activities and position papers to help guide new ways of engaging in research by and with First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities. This will include holistic, interdisciplinary and distinctions-based approaches that are transformative and contribute to reconciliation.

These Connection Grants are valued at up to $50,000 for six months, with the possibility of a six-month extension. The leadership and governance of all proposed projects must involve the participation of First Nations, Métis or Inuit communities.

The deadline for proposals is September 6, 2018, with results to be announced in October 2018.

NSERC RTI webinar

NSERC is hosting webinars to assist the research community on how to complete a Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) application using the Research Portal and the NSERC Canadian Common CV (CCV)
In order to prepare, we invite you to familiarize yourself with the following documents:

  • RTI program description which includes the Peer Review Manual (which will be updated shortly) and Frequently Asked Questions.
  • Instructions for Completing an RTI Application

We would greatly appreciate if you could extend this invitation to potential RTI applicants and co-applicants from your university who would be interested in attending these webinars.

Note - our webinars have limited spaces. If you are unable to join, you can always connect to the teleconference and listen in while following the presentation.

Considering the high attendance to our webinars, NSERC staff may not have time to respond to all individual questions during the session. Any additional questions should be directed to our support team at RESGRANT@NSERC-CRSNG.GC.CA.

Information Session on Mitacs Funding

  • Wednesday, September 19, 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm, SSC 9321
  • Presenter: Erin Azzopardi, Business Development Specialist, Mitacs Inc.

Mitacs provides flexible research funding for collaborations with industry and not-for-profit partners. Mitacs also supports international research networks through student mobility and provides research and training opportunities for your students and postdocs.

This information session is open for faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. It will include an overview of Mitacs programs, such as Accelerate and Elevate, which provide opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to apply their specialized expertise to research challenges relevant to industry or a community partner.

This session will also touch on new international opportunities. It will provide examples of funded social science projects, and where to start if you are interested in developing collaborative partnerships.

SSHRC Insight Grant Application Workshop

Former SSHRC committee members will discuss and answer your questions about the application review process, strategies for writing a successful application, and common mistakes seen on unsuccessful applications.

This workshop will be a great opportunity for current applicants to learn from the experiences of former committee members and get a better understanding of what happens to grant applications in the review room.

  • Date: Friday, September 14, 2018
  • Time: 10 - 11:30am
  • Location: 5220 SSC

Please RSVP: Research RSVP Invitation

Preparing Research Grant Proposals: CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC

How is your grant application judged? Will changes in the Councils have an impact on your approach to your application? Knowledgeable colleagues offer guidance and advice on how to best position your application, and share their experiences with grant review panels.

We begin this workshop with a brief Meet and Greet period, and continue with introductions and general observations from the panel.

Much of the session will be devoted to breakout groups dedicated to each of the three Councils, to provide time for focused discussion and questions. You choose which is most relevant for your area: CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC. Take a look at the grant application form and come with your questions and join the conversation.

Our Panelists:
  • Dr. David Holdsworth (CIHR), Professor, Departments of Surgery and Medical Biophysics and Scientist, Robarts Research Institute
  • Dr. Brian Branfireun (NSERC), Professor and Canada Research Chair, Department of Biology and Centre for Environment and Sustainability
  • Dr. Jacquie Burkell (SSHRC), Associate Professor and Assistant Dean Research, Faculty of Information and Media Studies
  • Date: Thursday, September 20, 2018
  • Time: 1:30pm - 4:00pm
  • Location: Room 121, The D.B. Weldon Library
  • Register at: teaching.uwo.ca
