Western remains open and classes are continuing as normal.
The University takes its direction from federal, provincial and local health authorities and they have not signalled any reason to be concerned about proceeding with normal teaching and learning activities at Western at this time.
Currently, the Public Health Agency of Canada has assessed the public health risk associated with 2019-nCoV in China as low for Canada. The public health risk is continually reassessed as new information becomes available. Western faculty and staff members have access to a broad range of health services and supports.
Personal wellbeing encompasses a wide range of ideas. Wellness involves not only working in a safe environment but addresses concerns surrounding physical, emotional, and mental health. A safe work environment is legislated by various levels of governments. It is also covered in the Labour Relations Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Employment Standards Act, and various other acts. Western offers in-house training in Occupational Health and Safety and Rehabilitation Services. Ontario has the WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) to oversee Ontario workplaces. As well, there is information about workplace health at Student Health Services.
Western participates in the Employee and Family Assistance Program. EFAP is a confidential and voluntary support service, provided by Morneau Shepell that can help you to optimize your current wellbeing, or to take the first step toward change. You can access help to find solutions to the challenges you face at any age and stage of your life.
At no cost to you, you and your family members can access immediate and confidential support in a way that is most suited to your communication preferences, comfort level and lifestyle. We know that when you and your family are well, you can bring your best self to work. EFAP is part of our efforts to continuously improve the programs we offer to support you and your family's well-being.
Counselling services are provided by experienced, Masters level counsellors. In-person counselling locations are available in London and surrounding communities. They are also available across Canada and internationally if you are travelling, on sabbatical or have a dependent studying away from home. Counselling can be done in-person, on the phone, via video or online. In addition to emergency and counselling services, EFAP offers an extensive range of services that can assist with challenges you face, and help to boost your health and wellness.
Stress can manifest itself in physical symptoms. The Canadian Institute of Stress provides information that may help identify a possible cause of stress that may or may not be related to your job. There is no shame in admitting there is a problem and Family Services London is one way to help you cope and improve your wellbeing.
