Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories – Arabella Soave
In our latest series, Meet Our Students, we highlight the inspiring journeys of students who have thrived in the Faculty of Social Science at Western University. Today, we celebrate Arabella Soave, a student whose perseverance, academic growth, and passion for social justice have shaped her into the person she is today.
From the moment Soave took her first economics course, she knew this was the field where her love for mathematics and real-world issues would come together. After navigating the flexibility of her first year, she decided to pursue an Honours Specialization in Economics while participating in the Scholar’s Electives (SE) Program. However, the path to success was not without its challenges. Early on, Soave withdrew from her Calculus course and faced setbacks in her second-year midterms. Yet, it was these experiences that helped her develop resilience and determination, traits that would define her academic journey.
The faculty in the Economics department played a pivotal role in her success. Soave recalls how professors offered one-on-one feedback and personalized education that kept her motivated and instilled confidence. From receiving book recommendations to engaging in class discussions on government decisions and inequality, the Economics department provided Soave with an enriched learning experience. This foundation, paired with her involvement in the SE Program, allowed her to contribute to meaningful research under the supervision of Dr. Kate H. Choi, exploring equity issues like access to subsidized housing for single-parent households and housing attainment for interracial couples in the U.S.
Soave’s academic achievements have paved the way for her to pursue a legal education at Western Law this fall. She credits the supportive community of professors, peers, and mentors for helping her reach this milestone, encouraging future students to "stay curious, ask questions, and never underestimate the power of a mentor."
Stay tuned for more stories from our exceptional students as we continue to celebrate their unique paths and achievements in Meet Our Students.
