In our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we highlight exceptional individuals who are shaping their futures through education and experience. This edition features Bronwen Petch, a third-year student pursuing a double major in Psychology and Leadership Studies. Petch’s academic journey has been a dynamic blend of interdisciplinary learning, hands-on research, and leadership development.

For the first two years of her degree, Bronwen studied at Brescia University College, where she discovered her passion for both Psychology and Leadership Studies. “The Introduction to Psychology course helped me find the different sectors of psychology that interest me, sparking my curiosity about the brain and human behaviour,” she shares. At the same time, her Leadership Studies courses introduced her to concepts of leadership styles, conflict resolution, and communication—skills that would later shape her academic and professional path.

Transitioning to the Faculty of Social Science at Western University has allowed Petch to explore even more opportunities. “Being part of the biggest faculty on campus has been so beneficial. The interdisciplinary approach has helped me connect concepts from both of my programs and apply them beyond the classroom.”

One of Petch’s favourite ways to engage with psychology is by participating in brain studies on campus. “Most recently, I took part in a sleep study, which was such an eye-opening experience. Each study I join gives me insight into lab research and what graduate school might be like. I always encourage other students to participate—it’s a great way to contribute to science and learn more about how our minds work.”

Beyond the classroom, Petch has gained valuable professional experience. This past summer, she worked as a Client Service Intern at Dream, a commercial real estate company. In her role, she conducted 160 tenant meetings across 26 buildings in Toronto, gaining firsthand experience in networking, business operations, and leadership in a corporate setting. “I was able to apply what I’ve learned in my Leadership courses, particularly in areas like organizational change and ethics. This experience helped me grow tremendously both professionally and personally.”

Mentorship has played a key role in Petch’s journey. “Starting at Brescia, I had incredible mentors who guided me. Moving to Main Campus meant I had to work to maintain those connections, but I’m grateful to have strong female mentors in both Psychology and Leadership. They provide career advice, share their experiences, and offer invaluable guidance.”

Petch’s leadership extends to student life as well. She has served as a Soph Orientation Leader twice—once for Brescia and now for the Faculty of Social Science. “The most rewarding part is when a student I mentored decides to become a Soph themselves. It’s amazing to see the impact of the program.” She is also the Brescia Relations Coordinator on the Social Science Student Council, helping to strengthen connections between Brescia and Western. Additionally, she is an active member of the Western Real Estate Club and the Western Psychology Association, where she has built friendships and expanded her network.

Reflecting on her time at Western, Bronwen credits the Faculty of Social Science for helping her grow in confidence, adaptability, and self-advocacy. “Moving from a small school to a large faculty taught me how to speak up, get involved, and push myself outside of my comfort zone. The faculty’s support—from academic advising to leadership opportunities—has truly shaped my academic and personal growth.”

Petch’s advice to future students is to “Trust the process. Everything will fall into place as it should.” She encourages students to explore a variety of courses and opportunities, emphasizing that finding one’s passion takes time but is always worth the journey.

One of Petch’s proudest achievements is her perseverance in returning to sport after surgery. “The recovery process took over a year, but being able to train again in the sport I competed in throughout my childhood is incredibly rewarding.”

Petch’s story is a testament to the transformative experiences available within the Faculty of Social Science. Stay tuned for more inspiring student journeys, and follow our social media channels to see how our students are making an impact!
