Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories – Cameron de Mello
In our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we highlight remarkable individuals who have embraced academic and professional growth within the Faculty of Social Science. This edition features Cameron de Mello, a fourth-year student specializing in Accounting in the BMOS program at Western University.
For Cameron, choosing the Accounting specialization was about more than just numbers—it was about understanding how financial insights drive business strategies. “I’ve always been drawn to the intersection of technical skills and strategic decision-making,” he shares. “This program has provided me with a strong foundation in financial analysis while also fostering my ability to think critically and communicate effectively.”
One of the most impactful experiences in his academic journey has been taking Personal Finance with Professor Barry Hwan. The course introduced him to essential real-world financial concepts, including tax filing, investing, and mortgage principles. “This course gave me the tools to make informed financial decisions, both personally and professionally,” he notes.
Cameron’s academic journey has been complemented by hands-on learning opportunities, particularly through internships. His experience at PwC was a turning point, allowing him to work on audits for clients in asset wealth management and the mining sector. “Handling complex data and interacting with senior stakeholders during my internship solidified my passion for professional services and reaffirmed my goal of pursuing my CPA designation.”
Beyond academics, Cameron has embraced leadership roles that have shaped his personal and professional growth. As Director of Communications for the Western Accounting Association, he organized events that connected students with industry professionals, sharpening his marketing and organizational skills. He also served as Vice President of Finance for the Medway Sydenham Residence Council, managing budgets and resource allocation to support student initiatives. “These roles taught me how to lead teams, communicate effectively, and manage responsibilities that extend beyond the classroom.”
His commitment to mentorship is evident in his role as a residence Soph, where he provided guidance and support to first-year students navigating university life. Cameron also took his leadership skills beyond campus, teaching English abroad in Taiwan—an experience that strengthened his adaptability, cultural awareness, and problem-solving abilities.
Western’s Careers & Experience services played a key role in preparing Cameron for success. From mock interviews to resume workshops, these resources equipped him with the confidence and skills to secure his internship and, ultimately, a full-time offer at PwC. “The faculty and career services have been instrumental in pushing me beyond my comfort zone, whether through networking events, job fairs, or leadership opportunities,” he says.
As he reflects on his time at Western, Cameron’s biggest takeaway is the importance of getting involved. “Take advantage of the incredible opportunities here—whether through internships, student organizations, or networking events. These experiences will shape your university journey and prepare you for life beyond the classroom.”
His biggest achievement to date? Securing a full-time position at PwC—an accomplishment that represents years of dedication, perseverance, and strategic career planning.
Cameron’s story is a testament to how the BMOS program empowers students to thrive in dynamic business environments. His journey highlights the value of a well-rounded education that blends technical expertise with real-world experience.
