Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories – Emma Lee

By Diana Corredor
Emma LeeIn our Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories series, we proudly showcase students whose journeys reflect the rich opportunities and transformative experiences available within the Faculty of Social Science. This edition features Emma Lee, an incoming HBA student with an Honours Specialization in International Relations.

From the moment she began exploring her university options, Lee knew Western University — and the Faculty of Social Science in particular — was the place where she could grow both academically and personally. The International Relations program immediately caught her attention, sparking a curiosity about the geopolitical forces that shape our world. “It offered more than just a major — it provided me with a lens through which I could critically examine global systems, power dynamics, and the interconnectedness of nations,” she explains.

What excites Lee most about the program is its balance of interactive seminars, essay-based analysis, and dynamic presentations, which align perfectly with her passion for learning and meaningful discussion. She values the interdisciplinary nature of the Faculty of Social Science, noting how the fusion of history and political science within the program allows her to develop a comprehensive understanding of complex global issues.

Beyond academics, Lee has immersed herself in leadership and advocacy roles that reflect her commitment to community and global awareness. As part of the Social Science Faculty Soph team, she welcomed new students during O-Week, serving as a mentor and guide during their first days on campus. This experience, she says, deepened her appreciation for the faculty’s supportive and inclusive environment.

Lee’s passion for advocacy extends to her work as VP Events for HanVoice, a student chapter of a non-profit organization advocating for North Korean human rights. In this role, she helps organize events that amplify marginalized voices and foster dialogue around global injustice. She also serves as VP Sponsorships for Bags of Promise, a student-led charity supporting underprivileged youth in the London community — work that has strengthened her commitment to creating a tangible and lasting impact.

Reflecting on her journey, Lee encourages prospective students to embrace the flexibility and interdisciplinary nature of the Faculty of Social Science. “You’re encouraged to explore, to ask questions across disciplines, and to tailor your academic journey to reflect your evolving interests,” she says. “Use it as a chance to discover what truly excites you, to connect with like-minded peers and professors, and to build a foundation that will support both your academic growth and your long-term success.”
