This edition features Shahrukh Khan, a Management & Organizational Studies student specializing in Finance, who has embraced every opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to his community.
As a first-year student, Khan was eager but unsure of how to navigate university life. "I wasn’t sure how to take advantage of all the opportunities available," he recalls. However, the mentorship and support from professors and advisors quickly changed that. "I remember feeling intimidated walking into office hours for the first time, but I was met with encouragement and genuine care. A professor not only helped me understand a challenging topic but also shared valuable advice on how to approach my academic and career goals." This support has motivated Khan to step out of his comfort zone and seize leadership opportunities early in his university journey.

Western’s Faculty of Social Science has provided Khan with a strong foundation, both academically and personally. From career-focused workshops to networking events that connect students with professionals, he has discovered a community dedicated to student success. "One of the most impactful moments for me was when a professor encouraged me to get involved in extracurricular activities," he shares. "That advice showed me that Western is about more than just academics—it’s about personal growth."

Taking that advice to heart, Khan became a first-year representative on the Social Science Students’ Council (SSSC), where he explored different roles in communications and advocacy. His involvement in events like Fall Preview Day and social media initiatives has helped him develop key skills while giving back to the Western community. Beyond the council, Khan serves as a charity coordinator for the Pakistan Student Association, working on meaningful initiatives that support causes close to his heart. "These experiences have not only helped me meet amazing people but have also shown me the value of teamwork, communication, and creativity," he says. "Even as a first-year student, I’ve been able to make an impact on campus, which motivates me to keep pushing myself to do more."

Throughout his journey, Khan has found a welcoming and supportive environment in the Social Science community. Whether through study groups, council meetings, or casual conversations, he has experienced firsthand the camaraderie among students. "During midterms, I joined a study group with other Social Science students, and it made such a difference—not just in tackling the material but in feeling connected to others going through the same challenges," he reflects.

For future students considering the Faculty of Social Science, Khan offers this advice: "Get involved and make the most of your first year. You don’t have to wait until later to make an impact—there are so many opportunities right from the start. Attend events, join extracurriculars, and reach out to professors or upper-year students—they’re always willing to help. The more you put yourself out there, the more you’ll gain. Most importantly, embrace the community—it’s supportive, welcoming, and will help you thrive in ways you didn’t expect."

Khan’s story is a testament to how mentorship, community, and proactive engagement can shape a student’s experience. Stay tuned for more inspiring success stories from our students, and follow our social media channels to see how our community continues to grow and thrive.
