The Western Experience
The Western undergraduate experience develops leaders, creates a global context for learning, and values research and the discovery of new knowledge that has a tangible impact on society.
Chloe Vanderlugt
President, Social Science Students’ Council
I’m so excited to welcome you to this next chapter of your journey at Western! University is a time of growth, learning, and opportunity. You’ll challenge yourself academically, make lifelong connections, and discover new passions.
University is an exciting experience, but it can sometimes feel overwhelming. My best advice? Your time at Western is truly what you make of it. There are countless. My best advice is this: your experience is truly what you make of it. Western and the Faculty of Social Science are known for the incredible student experience, and there are endless opportunities to get involved, explore your interests, and build your future. No one has everything figured out immediately (myself included!), but that’s okay; university is all about learning and growing at your own pace. One of the things I love most about Social Science is the strong sense of community. I’ve learned you will find your place here in Social Science.
One of the best ways to enhance your experience at Western is by getting involved in student leadership and faculty life. As President of the Social Science Students’ Council (SSSC), I have seen firsthand how impactful engaging with your faculty community can be. SSSC is Western’s largest faculty council, representing over 9,000 students in the Faculty of Social Science. SSSC is led by myself and my 5fiveincredible executives, Shreya, Yashvi, Aidan, Matt and Brianna, all leading portfolios in academics, advocacy, communications, finance and events. We aim to advocate for student needs, foster connections, and create meaningful opportunities for students to thrive. Whether through social events, wellness initiatives, or academic and professional development, we ensure that Social Science students feel supported and empowered. We also work closely with faculty administration and the University Students’ Council to ensure student voices are heard regarding key decisions affecting academic experiences, funding, and services. Additionally, SSSC manages faculty resources responsibly, providing financial grants to student groups and ensuring transparency in budget decisions. SSSC is here to support you every step of the way, and I encourage you to take advantage of everything Western has to offer.
Welcome again to Social Science, and I can’t wait to see all you accomplish here!
Welcoming Environment
Canada’s most comprehensive O-Week welcomes new students to campus with the help of more than 800 upper-year student leaders (Sophs) dedicated to guiding students through their first week at Western.
Leadership Opportunities
The Social Science Students’ Council (SSSC) is a great place to meet new friends and work together to enhance your program at Western. Members of the SSSC work on behalf of all students to ensure their voices are heard.
Within each Social Science department there is a student association that will provide you with another forum in which you can share ideas. These groups often organize trips that will supplement your formal education.
Experiential Learning
Western offers many opportunities inside and outside the classroom for you to apply your academic knowledge in real-world settings. With experiential learning, you can complement your studies with relevant, rewarding experiences that help you develop transferable skills and refine your career options. Make a difference locally, nationally and internationally.
Student Clubs
Joining a club gives you a chance to discover new passions, meet new friends and be part of a larger community. There are nearly 200 clubs on campus so whether you want to be involved in athletics, cultural or faith-based groups, music and performing arts, politics and social justice, volunteering causes, networking groups or interest-based clubs, there is a place for you.
Sports and Athletics
Western Mustangs have 46 Varsity athletic teams representing the University. Many Varsity programs lead Canadian universities in the number of championships won.
The Western Mustangs football team is one of the most decorated in Canadian history. Western Cheerleaders have won 26 of 27 Canadian national collegiate cheerleading titles and are the five-time Cheersport National Champions in the Collegiate Coed Division. Join a team and show your purple pride!
Taking part in intramural sports is a great way to get involved. Participants can enjoy a fun, equitable and safe playing environment.
Living in London
Set in the heart of Southwestern Ontario, London is the region’s economic, entertainment and cultural hub. With a population of more than 366,000, London is Canada’s 11th largest city and an ideal environment to work, play and live. Big enough for the ‘big city’ experience, but still far more affordable in comparison with many other Canadian cities, London boasts an extensive educational and health care community, while providing the safe and clean atmosphere of a small community.
Study Abroad
Students also have the opportunity to participate in international exchange programs. Students can study at more than 137 different institutions in 39 countries around the world. There’s no better way to meet new people and expand your global and intercultural horizons.
Study abroad for one year or one term while earning credits toward your Western degree.
