Program Deliverables & Fees

Note: Program deliverables and fees only apply to students who receive an internship offer. There are no academic penalties or fees for students who do not receive an offer.

Program Deliverables

After you receive a verified internship offer and sign a Social Science Internship Agreement, you will be enrolled in SS 3994, a 1.0 credit that is graded on a PAS/FAI basis.

To earn your credit, you will complete the following deliverables:

  • Internship Agreement – Sign a program agreement to confirm understanding of program policies before the start of your internship.
  • Mid-point Check-In Call – To be completed approximately half-way through your work term with the Experiential Learning Coordinator.
  • Employer Evaluation - To be completed just prior to completion of the work term.
  • Final Assignment – Complete a technical report, video report or blog-style reflection; complete a brief self-assessment form.
  • Presentation - Share a 5 minute summary of your experience with Western students, faculty and/or staff.

A course outline will be provided upon enrollment. See 2022-23 Course Outline as a reference.

The Social Science Experiential Learning Coordinator will be in contact with you while you are on internship to keep you informed of important dates and deadlines - make sure to check your Western e-mail account regularly.

Fees

As of May 2023, the internship fee for hired students is $500 per work term. This fee will be applied to your record upon course enrollment, and is payable through Student Center. Once students sign and submit their Social Science Internship Agreement to the Social Science Internship Program team, they are obligated to pay the internship fee in full unless exempted at the discretion of the Associate Dean (Undergraduate); independent of course deliverable completion, non-payment of the internship fee results in an “FAI” in Social Science 3990A/B/Y.

Western University will invoice students the Internship Course Fee and post it to your student account as follows:

  • 8 month work term $1,000 ($500 in May, and August)
  • 9-12 month work term $1,500 ($500 in May, August, and January)
  • 13-16 month work term $2,000 ($500 in May, August, January, and May of the following year)

While on internship, students do not pay tuition fees.

Students residing in Canada for their work term will automatically be assessed for the student health and dental plan fees (including myvirtualdoctor.ca) every September. Should a student wish to opt out of the health plan, dental plan, or myvirtualdoctor.ca, they must do so by the opt out deadline, September 23, 2023. Students must provide proof of alternate coverage to opt out of the health plan, however can opt out of dental and myvirtualdoctor.ca as long as they submit the opt out form by the deadline.

Payment of fees is the sole responsibility of the student, not the employer.
